What you should do after receiving Non-VA health services from an emergent situation?

Emergency Non-VA Health Services
  1. Notify the VA Texas Valley Costal Bend Healthcare System within 72 hours of discharge
  2. Upon receipt of your claims and medical records, Texas Valley Coastal Bend Non-VA Care will review your case and determine if it meets VA criteria for payment
    1. If your claim meets criteria, VA payment absolves you of any further financial responsibility
    2. If your claim is denied, VA is not financially liable for services provided to you
      • You may appeal the decision to deny your claim by sending a letter of disagreement to the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Non-VA Care Department.

What‘s next when you receive an authorization for Non-VA health services from the Texas Valley Coastal Bend VA?

  1. Review your authorization to ensure a VA provider has discussed the service with you
  2. Call the Non-VA provider listed on the authorization to schedule your appointment
  3. If no provider listed, please select a provider in your community and schedule an appointment
  4. At your appointment, give a copy of your authorization to your Non-VA Provider’s office
  5. Your Non-VA Provider will send claims to the Texas Valley Coastal Bend Non-VA Purchased Care Dept. for payment

Are you eligible for Travel Pay or Special Mode Transportation to my Non-VA health service appointment?

Beneficiary Travel Eligibility

The eligibility requirements for travel to Authorized Non-VA Health Services are the same as for regular VA appointments.

Transportation is provided at VA expense to veterans (for the examination, treatment, or care for which they are eligible) who:

  • are receiving a VA pension
  • are traveling in connection with treatment or care for a service-connected (SC) disability
  • have a SC disability rated at 30 percent or more
    are traveling incident to a scheduled Compensation and Pension (C&P) examination
  • have annual incomes, that do not exceed the maximum annual pension rate


How do you get reimbursed for travel to a Non-VA health service appointment?

You must claim travel pay at the Texas Valley Coastal Bend VA Medical Center Travel Department within 30 days of your appointment

  1. You need a signed and dated document that proves you attended your appointment for reimbursement
  2. If you were required to stay overnight, you will need to bring a copy off ALL receipts for reimbursement

How to fill prescriptions for approved Non-VA Purchased Care?

When a prescription is received by the Non-VA Purchased Care prescription service, a pharmacist will contact you to arrange delivery and discuss any medication related questions you may have. Approved prescriptions may also be dropped off at your local VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Pharmacy by the Veteran; however these prescriptions will be mailed to the patient’s address of record. Please arrange for prescriptions to be filled in advance of the date needed. Prescribed medications must be consistent with the VA National Formulary. The VA will not reimburse for any medications that are not on the VA National Formulary. A copy of the VA National Formulary can be found on the web
